Honda Bay: How to Add It to Your Palawan Route

Honda Bay is not the most dramatic island-hopping destination in Palawan. It does not offer the same giant limestone cliffs and hidden lagoons associated with El Nido or Coron. Its advantage is convenience. Sta. Lourdes Wharf is close to Puerto Princesa, the tour is suitable for many first-time island visitors, and a packaged trip can include hotel pickup, lunch, entrance fees, and snorkeling equipment.

The bay therefore works best as a “bridge day” inside a larger route. It transforms an otherwise practical Puerto Princesa stop into a complete beach experience without requiring another long land transfer. For families, older travelers, and visitors arriving through Puerto Princesa International Airport, that convenience can be more valuable than chasing one additional distant destination.

Use Honda Bay as the relaxed marine day and the Underground River as the protected heritage-and-karst day. Place whichever experience is more weather-sensitive on the clearer forecast, but make sure the Underground River permit remains secured for the correct date.

Do not assume that staying in Sabang or arriving at the park guarantees a permit. The official park notice specifically warns against that claim. A licensed tour operator can simplify the permit and transport process, while independent travelers need to secure the visitor entry permit before proceeding.

Travelers can compare Honda Bay and Underground River activities, but should verify the pickup zone, permit handling, fees, environmental charges, meal, and cancellation terms for weather.

Current 2026 route guides commonly estimate a shared van from Puerto Princesa to El Nido at around five to six hours, while buses can take longer. Port Barton is closer but still requires several hours of road travel, waiting, and a final local transfer. Departure times can depend on passenger loading.

That makes a same-day Honda Bay-to-El Nido connection a poor plan. Island tours often return in the afternoon. Guests still need to reach the hotel, shower, collect luggage, eat, find the van, and travel over a long road that becomes tiring after sun and snorkeling.

Travelers can compare private transfer options or review car-rental conditions. Check whether the vehicle may be taken on the intended Palawan roads, the insurance exclusions, one-way return, fuel, deposits, and driver requirements.

Puerto Princesa City Tourism currently lists a land travel time of around 20 minutes from the city proper. Its published guidance lists a tricycle around ₱300 for up to three people and a Sta. Lourdes-bound jeepney or multicab around ₱25 per person. Treat these as official planning figures rather than guaranteed door-to-door prices, because the hotel location, luggage, traffic, and vehicle arrangement can change the total.

A packaged joiner tour usually collects guests from hotels in an approved Puerto Princesa zone and handles transport to Sta. Lourdes. Confirm whether your property is inside that zone; distant resorts such as Astoria may attract a surcharge.

DIY travelers should arrive early enough to register, confirm available islands, pay fees, hire an accredited boat, rent equipment, buy water, and complete the passenger process. Do not negotiate with an unregistered boat away from the normal wharf system.

Current tour-platform listings commonly show full-day joiner trips around US$40–US$50 per person, though the exact peso price changes with exchange rate, operator, pickup zone, and promotion. Compare the final checkout amount rather than only the headline price.

A complete package should clearly state hotel pickup, drop-off, boat, guide, environmental charge, island entrances, lunch, drinking water, snorkeling mask, water shoes, insurance, child rates, and weather cancellation. If an item is not written in the inclusion list, assume it may cost extra.

DIY becomes attractive for a group because the boat cost is divided. It becomes less attractive for a solo traveler when private-boat costs, island fees, lunch, equipment, and city transport are added.

Pack the night before and eat breakfast early. A tour advertised as seven hours can still occupy most of the useful day after pickup windows, traffic, wharf processing, equipment rental, boat loading, and hotel drop-off.

Do not schedule a northbound van at the same time the tour is expected to return. Do not schedule a flight based only on a marketing estimate such as “drop-off at 3:00 PM.” Build a full overnight buffer before any important connection.

A light evening meal or city walk is reasonable after Honda Bay. A fixed firefly tour may be possible for energetic travelers, but only when pickup times do not overlap and the sea day returns on schedule.

Clouds and rain do not automatically cancel every trip, but thunderstorms, strong wind, poor visibility, or official marine warnings can stop operations. Check PAGASA and Puerto Princesa tourism advisories before departure.

Do not assume every island has a step-free toilet, stable handrail, paved path, or close boat-to-cottage route. A direct Cowrie visit may reduce transfers, but the initial boat boarding remains a significant challenge.
