Gaston Park is the strongest starting point because it explains the city before you begin exploring it. The City Government identifies the park as the former main plaza of Cagayan de Misamis during the Spanish colonial period and records its role in the Battle of Cagayan de Misamis in 1900.

The location is unusually convenient. St. Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral sits beside the park, City Hall is nearby and the old water tower that became the City Museum is part of the same civic cluster. You can therefore use Gaston Park as an outdoor pause between several heritage stops rather than traveling across the city for a standalone attraction.

The park’s circular layout and central fountain give it a formal civic character. It is not a botanical garden and should not be ranked by the amount of wilderness. Its value is history, trees, open space and the relationship between civic buildings around it.

That confirms the Eco Park as a real and active city project, but it does not automatically provide a simple tourist promise such as “open every day from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM with free admission.” A clean, permanent visitor schedule was not independently verified for this guide.

If the Eco Park interests you, contact city tourism or use the current city information before traveling specifically for it. This is particularly important when construction, landscaping or infrastructure work is taking place.

Mapawa is the choice when you want to stop looking at urban landscaping and enter forested terrain. It sits on the Cugman/Malasag side of Cagayan de Oro and is associated with waterfalls, streams, trails, camping and nature activities.

It is not comparable to Gaston Park. Expect transport planning, changing trail conditions, mud, rain and a need to confirm the current route or activity before leaving the city.
